Wesley Lake
Asbury Park, NJ
Excellent photo! I grew up in Monmouth County and will forever love the history of our Shore towns/cities/boroughs. I read in Asbury Park’s Glory Days: The Story of An American Resort that the Wesley Lake, which separates Ocean Grove and Asbury Park, served as not only a geographical buffer, but a social one as well. Ocean Grove was founded in 1869 as a Methodist beach community and churchgoers used to call Asbury Park as “the sinners on the other side of the lake” because of their ‘wild’ nightlife scene (i.e. jazz! liquor! gambling! dancing girls! etc.)
Even today, the divide still exists—it’s subtle, but the tension between both municipalities remains. I find it funny.
